One out of five people get Alzheimer or another form of dementia.
However, still way too little people talk about it. This campaign, started on World Alzheimer day (21st of September), is all about making Alzheimer discussible. When you’re wearing these two different socks, people will ask you about them, make jokes. “Hey you, do you know you’re wearing two different socks?” and then it’s your turn. Tell people about the disease, spread the word!
The whole profit of this campaign, will go to the VUmc Alzheimer Centrum in the Netherlands, whom do research to Alzheimer.
Why two different socks?
The socks symbolize the confusement, Alzheimerpatients have to deal with every single day. One sock is designed by the Dutch fashion-designer “Frans Molenaar”, who had to deal with Alzheimer himself. Frans worked at the French warehouse Nina Ricci in 1964 till 1966. In 1967 he opened his first store in Amsterdam and he came up with a new collection every half a year. Unfortunately, Frans fell of the stairs and died of the consequences… The other sock is designed by Dutch fashion-designer Mart Visser. Funny note: Mart Visser did an internship by Frans Molenaar!
The reason why I’m supporting this campaign
The reason why I’m supporting this campaign is, because my grandpa had Alzheimer.
The first signs of Alzheimer start with.. forgetting about particular words, what day it is, forgetting things about the past, or about what they’ve just said. My grandpa has become 94 years old, which is really really old, in general but especially for people with Alzheimer. He has always remembered us. I was super afraid that one day, we (the family) would enter his room and he wouldn’t know who we are. He always did know, even knew our names.
The last two years, his memory worsened. He asked me, or my parents, about “life”, holiday or school and we’d tell him about it. After we were done, he asked us again. And again and again and again. We didn’t mind. We kept telling our stories, which became shorter and shorter but that also, didn’t mind. We kept calm and eventually he knew that he’d already asked those things before. Some people get irritated or angry, but when you become angry; people with Alzheimer will get stressed and afraid. They don’t remember things, they don’t just don’t remember for fun, so keep your ease and stay calm 🙂
I’ve bought this super cute designer socks myself, to show everybody that I support this Alzheimer campaign and to tell everyone about it. There was no cure for my grandpa, nor is there a cure right now. But I hope, with all my heart, that one day… there will be.
You can buy these socks at the V&D, C&A, AH (Albert Heijn) and online (click) until October 4th.
